Rising from the dark nothingness and shadowed in the hidden places of the internet that Google cannot find, it beckons to curious adventurers with the promise of ebooks, printables, tutorials, and many other ways to enjoy your new jewelry.

I wanted a way to reward people who subscribe to www.starlit-sorceress-jewelry.… my monthly email newsletter , and this seemed like the most awesome way to do it.

What's in the newsletter? Well, it's pretty much the same thing as watching me here on deviantART, only more convenient, more content, all in one place, and only once a month.

Thinking about it? You can browse past issues here: www.starlit-sorceress-jewelry.…

Vague hints as to what I've added so far:
-Bookmarks
-Fantasy-inspired game boards
-Stationery and notepaper

Working on:
-2 Tutorials
(I don't think I'll ever stop adding things.)
  • Listening to: Pandora
  • Reading: Order of the Stick and Nimona
  • Watching: Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Playing: Mass Effect!
  • Eating: Spicy shrimp and noodles
This contest was extremely hard to judge, and once I'd narrowed it down to half the entries, it was almost impossible. If I hadn't added a runner-up prize level, I'd still be judging now.

Thank you so much to everyone who entered. The variety of entries was better than I could have imagined! I was really amazed by all the creativity. I saw the bra turned into a vest. I saw the neck chain used as a signature weapon. I saw the red drapery turned into skirts and loose, baggy pants. I was amused to notice so many people leaving the boots as they were after I mentioned that I liked them. I saw Leias suited for ballroom dancing, sneaking around dark city streets, firebending, brawling, and just being awesome!

Runners up: (Prize: Half price on all orders until September)

Everyone who entered wins free US shipping until September ($5 off international shipping)

Ready for more? Here are the prizes for this month's new contest: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c…

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit 2:  Just over a week left to submit your entries! Because so many people have entered already, I will definitely be offering a second tier of prizes, so there's even more of a chance that you'll win something.
--------
Edit: I've gotten a lot of stunningly awesome entries so far. You can browse them here: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c… Thank you to everyone who entered!
For those who haven't entered yet, the contest doesn't end until June 30th, and you can submit up to three entries.

(Here are the earrings you can win! starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c… )

The slave Leia costume was created when Carrie Fisher complained that her other costumes were too modest, but several scenes had to be re-shot because of wardrobe malfunctions.

Female characters shouldn't be forced to choose between a shapeleses wrist-to-ankle turtlneck dress and a defective metal bikini!

Here's where you come in.

Keeping the original colors, materials, and style, re-design the slave Leia costume into something the princess would wear willingly (and proudly) for practical everyday galaxy-saving.

Prove that female characters can still look great without showing THAT much skin.

Costume rules
-------------
-In general the purpose of this costume should be to show off a woman's personality and powerful presence...instead of going out of the way to show off her body.
-Nothing really tight, no cleavage, nothing above the knee, and no bare skin in between (bare arms are okay)
-The costume's function doesn't have to make sense for Leia or even the Star Wars universe. Any kind of clothing is okay.

(I shouldn't have to say this, but if you draw Leia wearing the costume, keep the anatomy realistic and the pose neutral or action-related...i.e. no sultry pinups.)

Contest Rules
-------------
One winner will receive these earrings: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c…
(If there are more than 3 entries, I'll throw in free U.S. shipping and $5 off international shipping.)

Everyone else will get free U.S. shipping / $5 off international shipping until the end of July.

Entries will be accepted between May 15th and June 30th
(My birthday is in June, so I decided that this month's contest should be extra special.)

No more than three entries per person.

Entries will be judged almost completely by design of the costume, but artistic skill might help convey your vision more strongly.

Once you upload your entry to dA (with a link back to this contest please!)  you can either comment here with a link, or send me a note.

A good reference of the original costume: images.wikia.com/starwars/imag…

A great resource for how to NOT draw female characters (and how to fix them when they're poorly-drawn) eschergirls.tumblr.com/

Important note! This isn't a discussion on whether or not Carrie Fisher should have worn the costume in Return of the Jedi. There's also nothing wrong with you if you cosplay Slave Leia. Once again, the only point of this contest is to demonstrate that female characters can still look good without ridiculously skimpy costumes. (I only chose Slave Leia because it's arguably the most well-known skimpy costume in nerd culture.)

I'm looking forward to designing a bookmark for this beautiful artbook. Watercolors, blue waves, golden sun, and fairies! Stay tuned, this is going to be good!

----------
EDIT: Four days left until June's mega contest. In the meantime, take a few quick pictures of your most beautiful, artistic book and bookmark, and win jewelry designed just for them.
---------

I love browsing bookstores and thrift stores for beautiful, artistic books and bookmarks, and I'd like to see some of your proudest finds.

Show off your favorite beautiful, artistic books and bookmarks, and I'll pick one of each to make free jewelry for.

Here's some jewelry I've made for some of my favorites:
Ribbon bookmark for "Journey to the Center of the Earth": starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c…
Bookmark charm for a majestic dragon painting bookmark: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c…

Contest lasts until May 15th (Just TWO weeks!) And then I'll announce June's contest, which is so big that it takes over part of May.

Rules
-------
1. Deviation should be categorized in photography. (I'll mostly look at the book or bookmark itself, but photography will definitely influence how awesome it looks.)

2. Link to the contest in your deviation.

3. Must only be submitted to DA during May 1- May 15, 2013.

4. G-rated please. (PG okay for implied romance and action scenes)

5. Only one book photo and one bookmark photo per person.

Prizes
---------
-I will design a ribbon bookmark for the best book and a bookmark charm for the best bookmark.

-At least two people have to enter in a category for there to be a prize.

-Once there are five entries, the bookmark charm gets free shipping. Once there are twelve entries, the ribbon bookmark gets free shipping. (I've never had one of my contests get twelve entries before, so I'd love to see that many or more!)

-Honorable mention(s): Everyone who doesn't win a prize will get free US shipping and $5 off international shipping until the end of June  (Just follow the rules and show reasonable effort.)

Permission rules
---------------
I get permission to copy/paste every entry onto my computer and use them to promote my jewelry for as long and as often as I want. (I won't change anything, and if I use your work at all, I will link to you on my website.)
  • Listening to: Metal
  • Reading: Game of Thrones maybe soon
  • Watching: Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Playing: Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • Eating: Chips and salsa
  • Drinking: Angry Orchard Cider
A past contest (and a future one too!) was/will be about photomanipulating my jewelry into something specific, such as a desktop background.

Now I'm just looking for an image for its own sake. Create a scene, environment, or anything else you think would fit the jewelry piece and look awesome.

Contest lasts the entire month of April

Rules
-------
1. Deviation should be categorized in "photomanipulation", of reasonable size and quality and not watermarked.

2. Link to the jewelry you used, and mention somewhere that I made it. (Don't forget to respect the usage rules of the rest of your photos too!)

3. Must only be submitted to DA during the month of April, 2013. (This is so I will never biased toward any "old favorites" that others have already sent me)

4. G-rated please. (PG okay for implied romance and action scenes)

5. No more than two entries, please. (I'd feel bad if you spent days making a whole bunch of entries and then didn't win.)

Prizes
---------
If at least two people enter, first prize will be a $20 necklace with shipping paid by the winner.
If at least five people enter, I'll pay US shipping ($5 off international shipping).
If more people enter, there will be more prizes.

Honorable mention(s): Everyone who doesn't win a prize will get free US shipping and $5 off international shipping until the end of May  (Just follow the rules and show reasonable effort.)

This month is another contest for people who have already bought something from me. I've done a modeling photo contest before. For this contest, photograph a jewelry piece any way you'd like. It just can't be worn by somebody.

Contest lasts the entire month of March

Rules
-------
1. Deviation should be categorized in "photography", of reasonable size and quality and not watermarked.

2. Credit me with a link in the description. (e.g. "Jewelry by *Starlit-Sorceress")

3. Must only be submitted to DA during the month of March, 2013. (This is so I will never biased toward any "old favorites" that others have already sent me)

4. G-rated please.

5. No more than two entries, please. (I'd feel bad if you spent days making a whole bunch of entries and then didn't win.)

6. The jewelry in the photograph must be jewelry you've ordered before today. I don't want anyone to buy something just to enter the contest and be disappointed if they don't win.

Prizes
---------
If at least two people enter, first prize will be a $20 necklace with shipping paid by the winner.
If at least five people enter, I'll pay US shipping ($5 off international shipping).
If more people enter, there will be more prizes.

Honorable mention(s): Free US shipping and $5 off international shipping until the end of April.  (Note: Every entry that follows the rules and shows reasonable effort is an honorable mention!)

Only one entry can win a prize. So if you submit two entries and they both win something, you'll get the better prize, but not both.

For those who haven't heard yet, starting yesterday, the US Postal Service is raising prices quite a bit for sending mail outside the US.

For a long time now, their prices have been really cheap compared to private companies like UPS and FedEX, but they're having some money problems, so they couldn't keep it up.

Here are my shipping prices now: starlit-sorceress-jewelry.com/…

This won't change anything for my US clients, and future international clients won't know there was a change, but that still leaves some people who would get a big surprise someday, so I wanted to avoid that.

So how does this change my offer of free shipping to almost all contest entries? Nothing changes for this month's contest: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c…   Starting next month, though, I think I'll offer just $5 off international shipping.

A lot of times, when I see something awesome I want to buy someday, I end up either losing the link or forgetting about it. DeviantART's +watch feature is great, but you can't see all of an artist's updates in one place...and I want to share my work with people outside DeviantART too.

So to that end, I'm designing an email newsletter that's especially friendly for people watching my work and waiting to buy something someday. It would only be once a month, and it would have a very short summary of everything...latest jewelry, news, etc. in one place.

If you saw this journal because you're +watching me, then chances are, you fit the description of who I'm writing it for. If so, I'd love to hear your suggestions. What is your ideal newsletter? What frustrates you about other newsletters? What features would make you want to sign up?

My website has the correct prices now: www.starlit-sorceress-jewelry.… and it's taking a while, but I'm about half done updating all my deviations. Everything should say the right price again by tomorrow evening.

Don't worry, though. I'm offering a week-long grace period. Place your order by January 15th and pay before February, and get everything half off (which is the same or better than the old prices.)

My apologies for the abrupt change, but I've been improving my craft and my business without changing prices for over a year and a half now. Based on the average prices on Etsy for wire-wrapped jewelry, I'm still undercharging!

(Don't forget about my January contest: fav.me/d5qgb5a)

Wow, this took a while! The delay was partly because I was still adjusting from the move and partly because there were two entries I just couldn't decide between. Finally, I realized that since it took so long to decide, I could only conclude that it means both deserve to win first prize. :)

So here are the two winners:

:iconmagicwingsforever: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c… Check out the wonderful magical chaos in this girl's hair!
:iconlildebbie: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c… I wish I had a dress that could turn into a secluded forest pond.

Each will win a $20 necklace with free US shipping (or $5 off international)

Runners up win free US shipping ($5 off international) until May: AJ333, CherrieNova, angeldust1997

----------------------
I'm moving to Mississippi, so the winner will be announced by the end of this week. (I want to be fair and choose a winner when I don't have so many things going on.)

-5 entries! First prize (a $20 necklace) will come with free shipping!
Contest folder: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c… (The desktop backgrounds are from last month)

Jewelry-Inspired Drawing

For January's contest, create a drawing or painting inspired by one or more of my jewelry pieces. Who might own that pair of earrings? Could that necklace have magical properties?    The jewelry doesn't have to be visible or even in the drawing at all. I'm mostly interested in the characters and background imagery inspired by it.

Contest begins now and ends on the last day of January.

-The medium is drawing or painting, either traditional or digital. (No photos or photomanipulation of any kind.)

-Also, no more than two entries, please. (I'd feel bad if you spent days making a whole bunch and then didn't win.)

Rules and tips
-------------------
Comment or note me with a link to your piece that....

1. is categorized appropriately for a drawing or painting (either digital or traditional), and once again no photos or anything that you didn't draw yourself.)

2. isn't obviously fanart. Yes, I know I've done fanart jewelry such as Arwen's evenstar pendant, but that's way too easy.

3. is submitted to DA during the month of January, 2013. (This is so I'm never biased toward any "old favorites" that people have already sent me)

4. Has a description in the comments about how they're connected and what you were inspired by. (Don't forget to link to the related jewelry pieces and credit me!)

5. is G-rated please.  (PG is okay for implied romance and light action/adventure)

Prize Rules
---------

If at least two people enter, first prize will be a $20 necklace with shipping paid by the winner. If at least five people enter, I'll pay shipping. If more people enter, there will be more prizes.

Honorable mention(s): Free shipping until the end of February. (Note: Every entry that follows the rules and shows reasonable effort is an honorable mention!)

New rule: Only one entry can win a prize. So if you submit two entries and they both win something, you'll get the better prize, but not both.

Permission rules
---------------
I get permission to copy/paste every entry into my pictures folder and use them to promote my jewelry for as long and as often as I want. (I won't change them, and if I use your work at all, I will link to you on my website.)

Contest/Vacation (and prices go up in January)

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 21, 2012, 6:13 PM

Vacation
========
I will be leaving tomorrow to spend Christmas with family and go to my friend's wedding. I won't have internet access except for my smartphone until a few days into January. I'd still love to discuss commissions, but probably won't be able to start working on them until I get back.

Summary: I will be semi-gone from December 22 to January 2/3/4? I can reply to notes/comments/emails, but I can't upload or mail anything.

Contest
=======
Here's the folder for this month's contest entries. starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c… Remember, first prize for desktop backgrounds featuring photos of my jewelry...is a free necklace. If more than 5 people enter, shipping is free too. Here's the original contest journal: fav.me/d5mu4u4 The contest ENDS on December 31st.

As soon as I get back in January, I'll announce the winner and post the next contest.

Prices
======
Also as soon as I get back, my prices will approximately double. I know it's a big jump, but I haven't raised my prices in a year and a half, and the quality of my work and professionalism of my commissioning process have both gone up quite a bit since then. I have a website, a newsletter, and instead of shipping jewelry in (*blush*) inside-out poptart boxes with crumpled newspaper, I'm going to invest in some nice shipping boxes, cloth bags, and even business card bookmarks and care-instruction cards.

I know many of you will be on vacation too, so there's no need to rush. There will be a one-week grace period to buy jewelry at the old price as long as you pay by February. (Just be sure to send the note/email describing what you want within the first week of the price change...or before.)

  • Listening to: The Hobbit audiobook
  • Watching: Doctor Who
  • Playing: Dominion online
  • Eating: Christmas Cookies
EDIT 2: (Announcing the winner)

The desktop background entries: starlit-sorceress.deviantart.c… (Free to use if you like, but not to edit or re-distribute as your own.)

And the winner is :iconchicky25: with her entry: chicky25.deviantart.com/art/Wa…

The composition is well done, and I especially like the color palette. The jewelry looks different in a fascinating way. I wish I could actually get my hands on a glass gem that looks like the one in the upper left.

Honorable mention goes to :icondark-lord-of-sith:

:iconchicky25: wins a custom-designed necklace for first prize, and since I didn't specify that only one entry can win, she also wins free shipping until February with her other entry.

:icondark-lord-of-sith: wins free shipping until February.

Next contest is here: fav.me/d5qgb5a

(Only one entry can win this time. :) )

(EDIT 1: Looking for stock photos that are okay to use? Check out my Facebook page for the Free Stock Photo Friday archive:  www.facebook.com/StarlitSorcer… )

-----

I'm  hosting a contest every month, and it's December 1st today!

December's contest is a mix of gift-giving, and a fresh start for the new year: Make a desktop background featuring one of my jewelry designs.

Contest begins now and ends on the last day of December.

-You can make it with ANY medium you'd like, as long as the finished result is an image that can be used as a desktop background.

-Also, no more than two entries, please. (I'd feel bad if you spent days making a whole bunch and then didn't win.)

Rules and tips
-------------------
Comment or note me with a link to your piece that....

1. is categorized in "customization > wallpaper"

2. looks good when someone with a common screen resolution sets it as their desktop background (i.e. without having it be too stretched or too small.) Here's a list of the most common screen resolutions: superiorwebsys.com/blog/93/Mos…

3. has the words "Starlit Sorceress Jewelry" somewhere on the right side or center of the design. It needs to be big enough so that people who casually notice it can read it. It needs to be small enough so that it doesn't overwhelm the design.

4. is submitted to DA during the month of December, 2012. (This is so I'm never biased toward any "old favorites" that people have already sent me)

5. has at least one piece of my jewelry in it (yes, you're allowed to copy and paste from my gallery for this purpose) and credits me with a link to each piece you used in the description. (e.g. "Jewelry by *Starlit-Sorceress")

6. allows other people to use it as their desktop background, but nothing else. This means you have to consider the permissions for any other stock you use.

7. is G-rated please. :)

Prizes
---------

If at least two people enter, first prize will be a necklace with shipping paid by the winner. If at least five people enter, I'll pay shipping. If more people enter, there will be more prizes.

Honorable mention(s): Free shipping until the end of January.

(Note: Every entry that follows the rules and shows reasonable effort is an honorable mention!)

Permission rules
---------------
Everyone gets permission to use it as their desktop background, but nothing else. (No editing or re-distributing as their own.)

I get permission to copy/paste every entry into my pictures folder and use them to promote my jewelry for as long and as often as I want. (If I use your work at all, I will link to you on my website.)

Celebrate Buy Nothing Day With Me

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 20, 2012, 7:37 PM

...Otherwise known as Black Friday.

It's an international day of protest against rampant consumerism. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buy_Noth…

I didn't think much about it until last year...when stores started opening their doors in the middle of the night instead of early in the morning. A sad result of this is that many employees have to skip Thanksgiving dinner or risk losing their jobs!

One retail store I used to work at has a policy where they won't hire you unless you're able to work on Black Friday. And nobody's allowed to take time off for Black Friday.

People travelling for Thanksgiving often have to delay their return because of the danger of all that shopping traffic.

Cyber Monday on the other hand....I imagine it was invented by a webmaster who didn't feel like spending his Thanksgiving dinner messing with his website. I like the idea of moving sales to Monday because it gives everybody a weekend to settle down and spend a little more time with family and long-distance relatives.

I'm still offering free shipping to Christmas shoppers. But it will be for orders placed on Cyber Monday instead. :)

P.S. An update I forgot to mention last time: Every Friday on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/StarlitSorcer… is Free Stock Photo Friday. (Use for photomanipulation or a weekly inspiration....and the rules are pretty relaxed.)

Check out my brand new website if you haven't already: www.starlit-sorceress-jewelry.… (Now with a new and improved homepage!)

So I'm actually going to start writing journals!

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 17, 2012, 6:01 PM

A lot of big changes right now, and plenty more coming up!

-----------
Website!
I not only have a website now, but it's polished enough (just about :P) that I've moved all my commission/ordering information over there. Check it out here: starlit-sorceress-jewelry.com/ and if you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them. (Right now, I'm working on making the homepage more useful, and moving the long lists of links on the order page into just one link to one page.)

-------------------------------
I'm finally on Tumblr!
www.tumblr.com/blog/starlit-so… And I'm in the middle of a sketch series where each piece of jewelry is inspired by a piece I heard at a concert.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Warning! Prices going up sometime in late December.
When I was just starting out, I priced my work accordingly, and slowly raised prices as I got better. Somewhere along the way, they stopped going up, even though I kept getting better. Now I have a website that I'm going to have to start paying for once the free trial expires for web-hosting.

Enjoy the current prices while you can, and after December, look out for...

--------------------------------
...A contest every month!
In case you didn't see the poll-that-wasn't-a-poll, I'll copy the information here:

The plan is to have a different contest theme for each month...and to have the same contest on the same month every year.

This month's contest is "Reviving Halloween", and it's for everyone who owns one of my jewelry pieces. (Don't worry, next month's contest will be open for everyone!)

Do you miss putting costumes together and posing for photos? Here's one more chance! Put together an outfit and photoshoot to match a piece of jewelry you've commissioned from me. It doesn't have to be elaborate or even Halloween-themed as long as it complements the jewelry well.

Contest begins right now and ends on the last day of November

Submission rules
-------------------
Comment or note me with a link to your photo that is....
1. categorized in "photography"
2. of reasonable size and quality and not watermarked.
3. a photo of a person wearing jewelry that I have made. (If the model or photographer is not you, they'll have to agree to the permission rules too)
4. submitted to DA during the month of November, 2012. (This is so I'm not biased toward any "old favorites" that people have already sent me)
5. crediting me with a link in the description. (e.g. "Jewelry by *Starlit-Sorceress")

One more thing...If you order a piece after today, it won't be able to win this year. I don't want anyone to buy something just to enter the contest and be disappointed if they don't win.

Prizes
---------

First prize: If at least two people enter, first prize will be a necklace. Depending on how many more people enter, the prizes will go up.

Honorable mention(s): Free shipping until the end of December.

Permission rules
---------------
I need the permission of both the model and the photographer to copy/paste every entry, not just the winner(s), into my pictures folder and use them to promote my jewelry for as long and as often as I want. (I will link to you on my website.)

2464-1 by BeeblebroxZ
BeeblebroxZ sells some beautiful iridescent bismuth crystals at his eBay store: stores.ebay.com/Bismuth-and-Be… that I'm itching to  wire-wrap. They're a little over a cubic inch, so they'd be perfect to wear as a necklace. I can turn a beautiful crystal into something you can wear and show off to people at the same time.

www.sashleydesigns.com/index.h… S. Ashley Designs makes beautiful fused glass...and has offered to make pieces in the size and shape of the gems I usually wire wrap. The result? Any design in my gallery can be enhanced by a fused glass gem custom-designed to match...and created by a chemical engineering major, no less!

-I'll give much more consideration to a good song I haven't heard before. (In other words, mainstream songs are less likely to win.)
-I don't like rap/hip-hop/R&B or country.
-If the winning song has been submitted by more than one person, the prize goes to the first person who submitted it.
-Contest ends June 30
